Two women died as a major fire broke out at a four-storeyed apartment complex at Devarachikkanahalli in Bengaluru on Tuesday evening.

The deceased have been identified as Lakshmidevi (82) and her daughter Bhagya Rekha (59) who were residing in a flat on the second-floor of Ashrith apartment building.

According to eyewitnesses, the fire broke out allegedly due to a gas cylinder blast. The two women got trapped in the blaze as their balcony was secured with metal grills.

ADGP Amarkumar Pandey, who rushed to the spot, said, "It looks like the cause of fire is a domestic gas cylinder explosion. As per our control room log, the fire incident took place around 4.15 pm and one fire tender was rushed within 20 minutes from Hulimavu fire station to the spot.”

He added that two more fire tenders from Jayanagar and Electronic city fire stations have been rushed to the spot as it was a huge blaze.
