The Varanasi police made two more arrests on Tuesday in connection with cheating the NEET exams.

The two arrested are Osama Shahid and Abhay Kumar Mehta. The first is a resident of Lucknow and the second of Patna. They were both arrested near Varanasi’s Pandeypur intersection.

According to the police, both had taken money to appear as solvers in place of the actual candidates for the exam.

Shahid who has given his fourth year MBBS exams from Lucknow’s King George’s Medical University ran a racket ensuring success in the exams. On successful clearing of the exam, he would charge the aspirants Rs 20-30 lakhs. Some 15 exam entrance identity cards, photographs, four cargo courier receipts, two mobile phones with incriminating chats and bank documents have been recovered from him.

Mehta, on the other hand, had prepared his sister Julie Kumari to appear as a solver for Rs 5 lakhs.

Both men are part of an inter-state gang and police is on the lookout for other members.

The National Eligibility cum Entrance test is an all India entrance exam for students who want to pursue undergraduate studies in the medical sciences. It is conducted in multiple languages and consists of papers in Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

This year’s exam has seen a paper leak in Jaipur in addition to cheating and the appearance of dummy candidates in return for crores of rupees.

Cheating though is not new in the exams and the NEET website has a list of candidates who are barred from attending the examination. In addition to strict measures of vigilance at exam centres, there are multiple combinations of question papers to keep the exams fair.

Eight new arrests were also made in Jaipur on Tuesday for cheating in the entrance exam which took place on September 12.
