Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, on Monday, pointed out that the ongoing protest by farmers in the state is affecting the development of the state.

According to NDTV, the chief minister, while speaking at a function in Hoshiarpur district of the state, urged the farmers to shift their protest to the national capital if they wish to mount pressure on the Union government. "Do not disturb Punjab with your protests," Singh was quoted as saying.

He observed that the farmers are protesting in as many as 113 locations across the state and added that these agitations are affecting the state's development.

His statements come a day after Punjab Congress president Navjot Singh Sidhu wrote to him seeking action on farmers' demands, including cancellation of "unfair" FIRs registered against growers during their agitation. Sidhu had earlier met representatives of 32 farm bodies which had raised their demands with him.

Earlier on Friday, the protesting farmers appealed to political parties to suspend their election campaign till the schedule for the Punjab assembly polls is out so that the focus remains on their agitation.
