Around 150 dogs were buried alive by some miscreants at Ranganathapura in Shivamogga district of Karnataka, reports said on Thursday. Police have filed an FIR and preliminary investigations revealed that the shocking incident took place on September 4.

The dogs were buried in a 15-20 feet deep pit in the Tammadihalli forest area.

According to The News Minute, the incident came to light after some animal rights activists, alerted by the locals who had got suspicious after hearing constant barking of the dogs, visited the spot.

The FIR has been filed at the Bhadravathi Rural police station under Section 11 (Treating animals cruelly) of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and Section 429 (Mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc., of any value or any animal of the value of fifty rupees) of Indian Penal Code.

The exact number of dogs killed and buried could not be ascertained.

Shivamogga SP Laxmi Prasad said an expert team comprising veterinarians is conducting an inspection of the spot and will submit a report to the department.

A few weeks ago, around 38 monkeys were found killed and abandoned in a village in Hassan district, prompting the Karnataka High Court to direct the state government to take action against the culprits.
