Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Lucknow to pay respects to former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh on Sunday. Kalyan Singh had died on Saturday at the age of 89.

Modi arrived at the Lucknow residence of Kalyan Singh, accompanied by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Governor Anandiben Patel, and placed a wreath in front of the mortal remains of Kalyan Singh. Speaking to mediapersons afterwards, Modi was quoted by ANI as saying, "We lost a capable leader. We should make maximum efforts by taking his values and resolutions to compensate for him; we should leave no stone unturned in fulfilling his dreams. I pray to Lord Ram to give Kalyan Singh a place by him and give strength to his family to bear this pain.”

Following news of Kalyan Singh's death on Saturday, Modi had praised the former BJP stalwart for his "contributions towards India’s cultural regeneration".

In a series of tweets, Modi wrote, "I am saddened beyond words. Kalyan Singh Ji…statesman, veteran administrator, grassroots level leader and great human. He leaves behind an indelible contribution towards the development of Uttar Pradesh... Generations to come will remain forever grateful to Kalyan Singh Ji for his contributions towards India’s cultural regeneration. He was firmly rooted in Indian values and took pride in our centuries old traditions. Kalyan Singh Ji gave voice to crores of people belonging to the marginalised sections of society. He made numerous efforts towards the empowerment of farmers, youngsters and women."

On Sunday, the Twitter handle of the Prime Minister's Office noted Modi had said, "Shri Kalyan Singh Ji made Jan Kalyan his life Mantra. He worked for the development of UP and the nation. He became synonymous with honesty and good administration."
