Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will lead a delegation of leaders from 10 political parties to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday to discuss the issue of a caste-based census.

The Bihar CM said it is the desire of people to have such a caste census. He said not just the people of Bihar, but those from other states too are demanding caste census.

"A delegation, comprising a representative each from 10 parties, is going to meet PM Narendra Modi on Monday over demand for a caste census. It is the desire of the people that there must be a caste census. I hope there will be a positive discussion on this," ANI quoted Kumar as saying.

Tejashwi Yadav, the leader of opposition in the state assembly, will be part of the delegation.

Kumar had, on August 3, written to PM Modi, seeking his appointment to discuss the demand for a caste-based census. He had earlier said the caste-based census will benefit all sections of the society and facilitate more effective governance.

A caste-based census other than for SCs and STs has not been undertaken in the country after 1931.
