For second consecutive day, India witnesses more than 40,000 cases

As many as 41,726 patients recovered in the past 24 hours

India continued to witness an increase in the number of daily COVID-19 cases with the country recording as many as 42,982 cases in the past 24 hours. With this, the total number of cases inched closer to 32 million, according to Union health ministry data.

The number of active cases in India has risen to 4,11,076. The active cases comprise 1.29 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 97.37 per cent.

This is the second consecutive day that the country is witnessing more than 40,000 cases after a dip in the past few weeks. On Wednesday, India had recorded 42,625 fresh cases.

Meanwhile, as many as 41,726 patients recovered in the past 24 hours, taking the total number of recovering in the country to 30,974,748.

Earlier, experts had said despite the rise in numbers it is too early to declare the beginning of a new wave.

The increased number of cases shows that the second wave is not yet over, they said.

"The pandemic is still raging and we are concerned that some states have the R number which is rising, which shows the virus wishes to expand and we must curb it," Niti Aayog Member (Health) Dr V.K. Paul had said earlier this week.
