Former Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala, who was released from prison this month after serving a sentence in a corruption case, has warned the Narendra Modi government of public disenchantment.

The ageing patriarch of the Indian National Lok Dal is the grandfather of Haryana Deputy Chief Minister Dushyant Chautala, whose Jannayak Janata Party is an ally of the BJP.

Om Prakash Chautala was quoted by ANI as saying on Saturday that "Every citizen of the country is unhappy because of BJP's wrong policies. It seems to me that people will not have to wait for 2024. Mid-term elections can be held in the country any time."

In 2013, Om Prakash Chautala and his son Ajay Chautala and over 50 others were convicted and sentenced over the illegal recruitment of 3,206 junior basic teachers in 2000. At the time of the recruitment, Om Prakash Chautala was chief minister. He was released in early July under the Delhi government's special remission rules that allowed six months' remission of sentence to convicts who had completed nine-and-half years of their 10-year sentence. Om Prakash Chautala had already been on parole since last year on account of the COVID-19 situation.

After his release, Om Prakash Chautala, who is 86, declared he was hopeful of fighting another election and added he had never been inactive in politics.

Om Prakash Chautala had opposed the Modi government's three farm reform laws and warned that the peaceful agitation by farmers could turn violent.
