A statement issued by actor-politician Nusrat Jahan Ruhi on her marital status on Wednesday looks set to become the object of political wrangling between the BJP and the Trinamool Congress.

Nusrat Jahan had claimed on Wednesday that her marriage to businessman Nikhil Jain in 2019 was not "a legal marriage but a live-in relationship as their wedding in Turkey did not have recognition in Indian law."

The statement was purportedly issued by Nusrat Jahan amid scrutiny over her relationship with actor Yash Dasgupta, who had contested the recent West Bengal Assembly polls on a BJP ticket. Nikhil Jain had declined to comment on the statement. He told reporters, "I don't want to say anything. Everything will be decided by the court. The matter is in court."

On Thursday, BJP IT operations chief Amit Malviya tweeted asking whether she lied in Parliament. Malviya shared a video clip of Nusrat Jahan taking oath in the Lok Sabha after the 2019 Parliament polls. In the video, Nusrat Jahan is heard referring to herself as "Nusrat Jahan Ruhi Jain", apparently taking Nikhil's surname.

Malviya tweeted, "TMC MP Nusrat Jahan Ruhi Jain’s personal life, who she is married to or who she is living in with, should not be anyone’s concern. But she is an elected representative and is on record in the Parliament that she is married to Nikhil Jain. Did she lie on the floor of the House?"

According to reports, a plea from Nikhil Jain to annul his marriage to Nusrat Jahan could come up for hearing in the Calcutta High Court later this month. Nikhil and Nusrat Jahan were reported to have separated last November.
