COVID-19: Maharashtra's downward trend continues; state records less than 40,000 cases

Total number of recoveries surpassed new cases on Friday

Maharashtra's COVID-19 graph continued its downward trend, with the state reporting less than 40,000 cases on Friday. As many as 39,923 cases were reported from the state in the past 24 hours, taking the COVID-19 tally to 5,309,215. With 695  coronavirus deaths on Friday, the death toll in the state touched 79,552.

This is the first time since since March 31 that the number of cases came down below 40,000. On March 31, the state registered 39,544 cases.

The total number of recoveries surpassed new cases on Friday, with 53,249 patients getting discharged, taking the number of recoveries to 47,07,980.

The samples tested in the last 24-hour period amounted to 2,50,784, making the positivity rate in the state to nearly 16 per cent.

With 10,401 new cases, Pune division reported highest spike in cases in all the divisions. It also reported 115 deaths. Mumbai city registered 1,660 new cases, taking its tally to 6,84,845, while its fatality count rose to 14,102 with 62 deaths.

The state has been recording less than 50,000 cases for the past few days. While there were 42,582 new cases on Thursday, on Wednesday, the number stood at 46,781.

Meanwhile, the lockdown-like restrictions in the state has been extended till June 1. The curbs were imposed on April 5, and further tightened on April 15 with Section 144 of the CrPc, banning assembly of five or more people at one place, imposed in the entire state.
