Maharashtra records less than 50,000 cases for fifth day in a row

Recoveries outnumbered new cases on Thursday

On fifth consecutive day, Maharashtra reported less than 50,000 cases on Thursday, with recoveries outnumbering new cases. As many as 54,535 patients were discharged from hospitals on Thursday, while 42,582 new cases were added, taking the state's tally to 52,69,292. Maharashtra now has 5,33,294 active cases.

On Wednesday, there were 46,781 new cases reported from the state, while the number was 40,956 on Tuesday. On Monday, there were 37,236 new cases, and the figures stood at 48,401 on Sunday.

Thursday also saw as many as 850 more patients succumbing to the disease, taking the death toll in the state to 78,857. Of the 850 deaths, 409 had occurred in the past 48 hours, 160 last week and the rest 281 before the last week but were added to the toll on Thursday.

With 2,50,398 more coronavirus tests conducted in the state, the number of samples examined so far rose to 3,03,51,356.

Mumbai city, meanwhile, registered 1,952 new cases, taking its tally to 6,83,185, while the fatality count in the city rose to 14,040 with 68 new deaths.

The lockdown-like restrictions in the state has been extended till June 1. The curbs were imposed on April 5, and further tightened on April 15 with Section 144 of the CrPc, banning assembly of five or more people at one place, imposed in the entire state.
