Maharashtra has seen a dip in COVID-19 cases on Monday, with the state reporting 37,236 new cases in the past 24 hours hours. This is the lowest number of daily cases since March 30. With this, the case load in the state has risen to 5,138,973.

However, the reduced daily count could be attributed to the less number of testes carried out. While on Sunday, as many as 2,47,466 testes were carried out, the number of samples tested dropped to 1,92,330 on Monday.

With 549 deaths reported in the past 24 hours, the death toll in the state has risen to 76,398.

Mumbai continued with its downward trajectory in the number of cases, with the city reporting 1,794 in the past 24 hours—the lowest single-day count in nearly two months. With the addition of 1,794 new coronavirus infections and 74 fresh fatalities, the financial capital's cumulative caseload rose to 6,78,269 and the toll to 13,891. Fewer coronavirus tests over the weekend could have led to a significant drop in the number of new infections.

In the last 24 hours, 3,580 patients were discharged from hospitals, pushing the number of recovered cases to 6,16,998, according to the BMC data.

Meanwhile, an online survey showed that 84 per cent of people in Maharashtra want the lockdown to continue till May 31. Most people also suggest home deliveries of all goods to minimise business disruption and for consumer convenience.

There has been lockdown-like restrictions in place since mid-April following a steep rise in cases in the second wave of the pandemic along with some other states. The current restrictions are scheduled to end on May 14, if not extended further.
