Kerala health minister K.K. Shailaja in quarantine after kin tests COVID-19 positive

She took to Facebook to confirm the same, adding that she has no symptoms

Kerala Health Minister K.K. Shailaja on Tuesday confirmed that she has gone in quarantine after her son and daughter-in-law tested positive for COVID-19.

The 64-year-old took to Facebook to inform her followers that she will be in home quarantine.

“My son and his wife have tested positive. Since I was a primary contact, I will be in quarantine,” she wrote, adding that she has shown no symptoms.

Popularly known as Shailaja Teacher, the minister was instrumental in the state’s fight against COVID-19 in the initial stages last year. A CPM leader hailing from Kannur, she is one of the two ministers in the Pinarayi Vijayan cabinet.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is also in home quarantine after he tested positive for the virus last week.

On Monday, a core committee of COVID-19 management in Kerala announced that night curfew from 9 pm to 5 am will be imposed in the state for two weeks from Tuesday amid a recent surge in coronavirus cases.

Essential services, including medical stores, hospitals, fuel stations, night shift employees, milk, newspaper and media, goods transportation and public transportation, have been exempted from the night restrictions.

Malls and cinemas can function only till 7.30 pm. All meetings, training events and tuitions classes will be held online. Restaurants need to restrict in-house dining and home deliveries and takeaways would not be permitted beyond 9 pm.
