Ahmedabad police arrested an MBBS student, studying in NHL Municipal Medical College of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation, for stealing antigen test kits for COVID-19 worth Rs 6.27 lakh.

According to media reports, the 21-year-old student, identified as Mit Jethva, has been accused of stealing test kits from an urban health centre, which has been providing kits to various testing centres, in Ahmedabad. He was arrested on Sunday following a complaint filed by the medical officer of the health centre, reports The Indian Express.

The incident happened on March 24. According to the complaint, filed by Dr Pavan Patel, the medical staff at the health centre handling the stock of the kits informed him that an unidentified person made away with 16 boxes of test kits. The registration number of the car in which the unidentified man left was noted down by the medical staff.

Patel asked around the testing centres and ensured that nobody received the stolen kits, and filed a police complaint. Based on the registration number of the car, the police zeroed in on the accused and took him into custody.

Jethva will be formally arrested after the police receive his test result for COVID-19.

The police said efforts are on to nab a marketing professional to whom the accused had given the stolen kits.
