The Southern Railway has banned charging of mobile phones and laptops inside AC compartments during night. Accordingly, charging points in trains will be switched off from 11pm to 5am.

According to media reports, the ban is meant to reduce the chances of fire accidents.

Although an instruction in this regard was already issued, charging points were not being turned off at night in some trains. Now, the authorities warned that surprise checks will be conducted in trains and action will be taken against employees responsible for keeping the charging points off, in case of lapses.

There have been incidents caused by heating of mobile phones and laptops, which prompted the Railways to take the steps. Besides, there were also complaints of disturbance caused to passengers who were sleeping, by those using electronic devices at night.
