Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, leaders from his party and a few journalists have been named in first information reports by the police following a scuffle that happened during the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister’s press conference in Moradabad.

On March 11, Yadav was in Moradabad to attend the wedding of a party MLA. During a press conference here, as seen in videos that emerged from the meet, Yadav is seen telling journalists not to work for the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Soon after, a scuffle broke out between the scribes and Yadav’s security personnel.

On the evening of March 13, an FIR was registered against Yadav and 20 unidentified party men under Sections 147, 342 and 323 of the Indian Penal Code. The FIR says that Yadav was agitated upon being asked some personal questions.

“He indicated to his guards and workers to attack the journalists,” the report read.

The report was lodged on the basis of a complaint given to the police by Awdhesh Parshar, the president of the local journalist association.

One of the journalists, Fareed Shamsi, got jabbed on the nose during the scuffle. He said, “I was just doing my job.”

Yadav tweeted in response by pasting the FIR on his social media account and commenting, “I am posting the FIR lodged against me by the BJP government for informing the public of Uttar Pradesh. If need be, they will also put up hoardings in Lucknow. This FIR is an indication of the disappointment of a BJP on the path of defeat.”

This is not the first time that Yadav has lost his cool with journalists. A few days ago, too, he had accused a journalist of being a stooge of the ruling party.

His party spokesperson Juhie Singh said, “It is a conspiracy of the BJP.”

The hoarding reference was a jibe at the state government which had put up posters of those charged during the anti-CAA protests in Lucknow.

Later, an FIR was also registered against two television journalists under Sections 160, 341, 332, 353, 504, 499 and 120B.

Prabhakar Choudhary, the SSP of Moradabad said, “Investigation is on, and we will record the statements of all parties.”
