A day after the Aam Aadmi Party made inroads in Gujarat politics, winning 27 seats in the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC), AAP party chief and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said this is the beginning of a new kind politics in the state.

In a video message on Wednesday, Kejriwal said the people of Surat have made AAP the main opposition, replacing the 125-year-old Congress party. "I assure you that each of our winning candidates will handle the responsibility with utmost honesty."

While the BJP retained power by winning 93 seats in the 120-seat SMC, the AAP won remaining 27 seats. The Congress, which had won 36 seats in SMC last time, was reduced to zero seats. The AAP had received crucial support from the Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), the organisation agitating for quota for the Patel community, once led by Hardik Patel.

Gujarat has began a new kind of politics, Kejriwal said. “The politics of honesty, politics of good work, politics of good schools, politics of hospitals, politics of inexpensive, round the clock electricity," he said, and added that his party will partner with the people of Gujarat to improve the state.

He said he will visit Surat on February 26 to personally thank the people of the city.

"Salute to the hard work of all the workers of the Gujarat unit of the Aam Aadmi Party and congratulations to all. Voters in Surat have also expressed that now the whole of Gujarat is ready to welcome the politics of karma in the future," he tweeted in Gujarati, along with the video message.
