No new COVID-19 deaths in 7 states/UTs in 3 weeks: Centre

Kerala and Maharashtra contribute 71% of the total active cases in the country

Seven states and Union Territories have reported no new COVID-19 deaths in the last three weeks, while 15 have not registered any such fatality in the past 24 hours, the Union health ministry said on Tuesday. Addressing media, Union Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan said there has been a 55 per cent decline in average daily COVID-19 deaths in the last five weeks.

"The current situation of the pandemic is satisfactory. We are very happy to note that COVID-19 deaths reported are below 100 consistently. Also, no death has been reported in Delhi for the last 24 hours. This is a remarkable feat," Bhushan said.

The states and UTs with zero COVID-19 deaths in the last three weeks are: The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Mizoram, Nagaland and the Lakshadweep.

According to the ministry, two states—Kerala and Maharashtra—contribute around 71 per cent of the total active COVID-19 cases in the country. While Kerala accounts for 45.72 per cent cases, Maharashtra has 25.06 per cent cases. Kerala recorded 5,214 COVID-19 cases on Tuesday, pushing the caseload to 9,77,394, while the toll mounted to 3,902 with 19 additional fatalities

According to the health ministry, thirty-three states/UTs have less than 5,000 active cases. The case positivity rate for the last one week is 1.68 per cent.

“India’s average daily deaths also continue to sharply decline. From a high of 211 in the second week of January 2021, average daily deaths have reduced to 96 in the second week of February, 2021, registering a decline of 55 per cent,” the ministry said.

Meanwhile, the number of healthcare and frontline workers vaccinated against COVID-19 has reached 65.28 lakh on the 25th day of the countrywide vaccination program. India is the topmost country to reach the six million mark of COVID vaccinations in just 24 days, the ministry said.

“The cumulative number of healthcare workers and frontline workers vaccinated against COVID19 is 65,28,210, as per the provisional report. 1,34,616 sessions have been held so far. 7,860 sessions were held till 6:30 pm today (Tuesday),” the ministry said in a statement.

Of the cumulative coverage, 55,85,043 are healthcare workers and 9,43,167 are frontline workers. 

According to the ministry, 12 states and UTs have vaccinated more than 65 per cent of registered healthcare workers. These are Bihar (78.1 per cent), Tripura (77.1), Madhya Pradesh (76), Uttarakhand (73.7), Odisha (72.4), Mizoram (69.9), Himachal Pradesh (68.7), Uttar Pradesh (68), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (67.9), Rajasthan (67.2), Kerala (66.9) and Lakshadweep (66.7).
