At a time when Congress President Sonia Gandhi is attempting to soothe discontent in the party, Ruchi Gupta, incharge of the student's wing of the party and considered close to former party chief Rahul Gandhi, quit from her post complaining about important organisational changes remaining pending for too long.

Gupta's announcement of her resignation as incharge of National Students Union of India (NSUI) came even as Gandhi was meeting senior leaders of her party at her 10, Janpath residence, the participants including some of the 23 dissenting leaders who had written to her in August seeking an overhaul of the organisation and a visible, effective and full-time leadership.

Gupta announced her resignation in a tweet, saying, “I regret to announce that I have resigned. I am grateful to Rahulji and Soniaji for giving me this opportunity.”

Interestingly, she attached to the tweet an opinion piece written by her that appeared in a leading daily on Saturday. In the article, Gupta has written about how the Congress may be at its nadir, but it is still politically relevant and its revival is linked to how the organisation is rebuilt.

In an internal NSUI Whatsapp group, Gupta is learnt to have announced her decision to quit, writing that important organisational changes have remained pending for very long. She is said to have stated that the national committee took one year and three months to be formed, the state presidents' appointments have remained pending for months and many state units are waiting for reorganisation to make space for new activists.

She is learnt to have expressed her dissatisfaction with AICC General Secretary In Charge of Organisation K.C. Venugopal allegedly delaying organisational changes in the NSUI. She reportedly stated in her Whatsapp message that the delays are damaging the organisation, but it is not possible to repeatedly escalate these issues to the Congress President and hence, the situation has become untenable for her.
