Supreme Court judge Justice N.V. Ramana received support from the bar on the issue of Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy making several allegations against him in a letter to Chief Justice of India S.A. Bobde.

The Supreme Court Advocates-on-Record Association (SCAORA) and the Delhi High Court Bar Association passed resolutions to condemn the letter.

The executive council of the SCAORA met virtually on Tuesday to discuss the issue and passed a resolution in which it said that it noted with deep anguish the contents of the letter that pertains to a sitting judge of the Supreme Court who is next in line to become the CJI.

“The SCAORA condemns the act of the unwarranted release of the said letter on 10.10.2020 in a press conference, to be lacking in propriety and not in accord with the High Office of the Constitutional functionary involved, as it tends to scandalise and breach the independence of the judiciary,” the resolution said.

The executive committee of the Delhi High Court Bar Association passed a unanimous resolution in which it said the “ill-founded letter” written by Reddy “unfairly and without reason casts serious aspersions on the alleged conduct” of Ramana and judges of the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

It said the letter is an “abject and uncalled for interference in the due administration of justice” by the Andhra Pradesh High Court.

“The writing of the said letter and its circulation in public domain is clearly a dishonest attempt at overawing the independence of judiciary and tantamount to contempt of the Hon'ble Court. The Delhi High Court Bar Association condemns this blatant attempt to shake the confidence of the public at large in the judicial institution,” the resolution read.

Ramana has been chief justice of the Delhi High Court. The high court bar association said in its resolution that he has been one of the most virtuous judges with the highest level of integrity.
