A day after the Centre handed over the Hathras rape case to the Central Bureau of Investigation, the central agency registered an FIR against prime accused Sandeep. The FIR has been registered under IPC sections related to rape, 376-D which deals with gang-rape, 307 for attempt to murder and 302 for murder and sections of the SC/ST Prevention of Atrocities Act.

The CBI has named prime accused Sandeep in its official FIR, based on the original complaint of the family, in which only one person was named as an accused.

The victim’s brother had said in his complaint to the local police that Sandeep was trying to strangle his sister in the field and after hearing her cry, their mother reached the spot, but the accused fled.

The CBI FIR documents the same and named Sandeep in it, mentioningthe time of the incident as 9.30am.

It was based on the dying declaration of the victim during the course of the investigation that the Uttar Pradesh police had added names of three more local upper caste men for gang-raping and attempting to strangle her.

The case had been registered at Chandpa Police Station in Hathras district.

Once the CBI starts probing the case and gathers all the case material and evidence from the UP police, it is likely to add names of more accused.

A special team has been constituted by the CBI to investigate the case. The case has been registered on the request of Uttar Pradesh Government and further Notification from the Department of Personnel and Training, a spokesperson of the central agency said.
