Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has written to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on the problem of the unemployed youth in the state, a day after the government directed that all departments make available information on vacant posts.

The Congress general secretary’s letter dated September 19 says, “The youth of the state are very disturbed and demoralised.”

The letter comes two days after Priyanka interacted with 12,460 candidates who had cleared the teacher’s appointment exams in the state. These candidates had not been appointed in the 24 districts for which they had cleared the corresponding exams as there were no corresponding vacancies. The Congress state unit had also taken to the streets to protest the issue.

Priyanka’s letter says that many of the young have been forced to take the matter to the courts. “Many among these are youth whose lives have been filled with struggle and their painful stories saddened me…. Many of them are on the verge of depression. They have the responsibility of managing their homes too.”

The letter calls for “human compassion” and immediate appointment of the eligible candidates in the districts.

On Friday, an official release from the chief minister’s office said that during the last three years, the present government had ensured 3 lakh jobs through a transparent and non-discriminatory process. It also announced that the recruitment process for all vacant posts in the state would kick off in the coming three months and be completed in six months. All recruitment agencies in the state had been called upon to chalk out a plan for the same.

Since September 2017, when the current government took charge, 2.94 lakh recruitments have been made, the largest chunk being in the police services and the basic education department. Currently, 69,000 posts in the basic education department and 16,629 in the police department are in the process of being filled.

Though Uttar Pradesh’s unemployment rate is less than the national average, the opposition has incessantly targeted the government for rising numbers of the unemployed.

Priyanka, who has written to the chief minister on various occasions, has asked how the government can be “heartless” and “aggressive” in dealing with the unemployed whose problems have been aggravated by the pandemic.
