Three militants were killed and an Army major and two special operations group (SOG) policemen were injured in an encounter in Jammu and Kashmir's Baramulla district on Friday.

The operation against militants was started by police, CRPF and Army’s 29 RR after receiving information about their presence in the area. When the security forces launched a search operation in the village, the militants opened fire on them from a hideout.

In the exchange of fire, one militant was killed while an Army major was critically injured. He was removed to the Army hospital where, after several hours, his condition and that of the two SOG men, who sustained injuries later, was stated to stable.

The operation had to be halted for some time to rescue civilians from the village whose houses were close to the militant hideout.

According to sources, after one of the militants were killed, they changed their positions, but the security forces were quick to engage them again.

In the gunfight, two SOG men were injured while the two militants were killed. The identity of the slain militants is yet to be ascertained

Army spokesperson Colonel Rajesh Kalia, in a statement, said two more militants have been killed in Operation Widipura. “Total three militants were killed. Joint operations are in progress,’” he said.
