Several people feared trapped after building collapses in Maharashtra's Raigad

Nearly 70 people are feared trapped in the debris after a building in Maharashtra's Raigad district collapsed on Monday.

Rescue operations are under way. According to news agency PTI, 17 people sustained injuries in the building collapse.

According to news agency ANI, three teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are on the spot. "Today at about 6.50pm, a ground+four floor building collapsed in Kajalpura area of Mahad tehsil in District Raigad, Maharashtra. About 50 people are feared to be trapped. Three teams of NDRF have moved. Teams have moved with all the necessary equipment, canine squad etc," NDTV quoted an NDRF official as saying.

Minister Aditi S. Tatkare said three floors of a five-story building collapsed. Fifteen people have been rescued so far.

In a tweet, the chief minister's office said CM Uddhav Thackeray spoke to local MLA Bharatshet Gogawale and district collector Nidhi Chaudhary and assured them all possible support from rescue and relief works.

Terming the incident “tragic,” Home Minister Amit Shah, in a tweet, said he has spoken to DG NDRF to offer all possible assistance. “The collapse of a building in Raigad, Maharashtra is very tragic. Have spoken to DG @NDRFHQ to provide all possible assistance, teams are on the way and will be assisting with the rescue operations as soon as possible. Praying for everyone’s safety,” he wrote.
