One person was arrested on Thursday in connection with the rape and assault of a 13-year-old girl in Paschim Vihar area of west Delhi. The Delhi Police, however, has not yet revealed his identity.

Police said the accused was identified on the basis of CCTV footage and that he had previous criminal records.

The minor girl was allegedly raped by the accused, who also hit her face and head with a sharp object at her home on August 4.

Police said they received information about the incident on Tuesday evening. The neighbours saw the girl lying in a pool of blood and informed the police and her parents.

The victim was first taken to Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Hospital. After preliminary treatment, she was shifted to AIIMS for further treatment.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the parents of the girl were at their workplace and the victim was alone in the house when the incident took place, police said.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal visited AIIMS and said he would arrange the best lawyer for the victim to ensure maximum punishment for the culprit.

“It has shaken me to the core. Such predators roaming free cannot be tolerated,” the CM tweeted.

Meanwhile, the incident has sparked off a political blame-game with the Congress workers waving black flags and raising slogans against Kejriwal when he arrived at AIIMS.

The Congress leaders, including state president Anil Kumar, also submitted a memorandum to the Lt Governor's office, demanding a CBI enquiry in the case and arrest of the culprits.

Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta said he was "deeply shocked to learn about the "heinous" assault on the girl. He said the BJP would extend financial help to the family of the victim.
