High drama prevailed during the investiture ceremony of newly-appointed Haryana state Bharatiya Janata Party president O.P. Dhankar as a man attempted suicide while raising slogans against police.

The ceremony, attended by hundreds of BJP workers and senior party leaders, including Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, was being held outside the party headquarters in Rohtak when Rajvir got up and severed his veins on both legs while raising anti-police slogans. His screams drew everyone’s attention to him, and the function was halted for some time as Rajvir was taken to the hospital.

Rajvir was rushed to PGIMS, Rohtak where his condition is reportedly stable. As per sources, he was carrying a suicide note in his pocket.

This is his second suicide attempt. Rajvir had tried to end his life in a similar way outside Rohtak SP’s office almost a year ago. He had opened a de-addiction centre which was closed following a complaint that he was providing drugs. An FIR was registered based on the complaint which he alleged was false. He also allegedly bribed the cops to get it quashed, but nothing happened. Rajvir had said he holds two DSPs and a Sub Divisional Magistrate responsible for the harassment.

Local SHO Jai Narayan said that though Rajvir is stable, they are yet to record his statement. The police suspects a connection between his two suicide attempts.

Meanwhile, the ceremony has drawn flak from the opposition for ignoring social distancing norms. “They are crying hoarse over social distancing, imposing various restrictions and fines on common man, but they don’t follow it themselves. Many senior BJP leaders were careless with their masks. The CM needs to introspect,” said a senior Congress leader.
