As COVID-19 pandemic made wearing of masks the new normal, the initial, boring, plain-looking masks have given way to more trendy, fashionable ones. Protesters in the US have even been making it a political tool, with people turning up for the Black Lives Matter protests with masks that have strong political messages.

A few days ago, a man in Pune district of Maharashtra pushed the trend a bit further by making for himself a customised gold mask, worth nearly Rs 3 lakh. Shankar Kurhade, a resident of Pune's Pimpri-Chinchwad town, was himself inspired by a news about a silver mask. "I saw a news on television about a silver mask. I then spoke to my jeweller and ordered a gold mask," he said. The jeweller delivered the mask, costing Rs 2.89 lakh, in 10 days, the businessman had said, according to news agency PTI.

The trend seems to have caught the fancy of others as a jewellery shop in Surat, the diamond capital of India, have began making diamond-studded masks. According to a News18 report, these masks, which costs Rs 1,40,000, are mostly used during wedding functions. Some of these diamond-studded masks costs upto Rs 4 lakh.

In May, an Assam couple had garnered social media attention after they were seen wearing silk handloom face masks, matching their attire, for their wedding. The reusable masks, made of Assam’s Paat silk, were designed by Guwahati-based fashion and textiles designer Nandini Borkakati.
