India, on Sunday, surpassed Russia to become the third worst-affected country, with the number of COVID-19 cases in the country crossing the 6.9 lakh mark. According to America's Johns Hopkins University (JHU), Russia has recorded over 6.8 lakh cases.
India is now behind Brazil (over 15 lakh cases) and the US, which has so far recorded over 28 lakh cases.
According to Johns Hopkins University, Russia has been seeing a steady decline in the number of cases while India, Brazil and the US are yet to witness any respite in terms of the daily numbers.
India had recorded the highest single-day surge of nearly 25,000 cases on Sunday, with more than 600 deaths within 24 hours. The worst affected state, Maharashtra, crossed the grim milestone of two lakh COVID-19 cases, Tamil Nadu's tally reached 1.11 lakh and Delhi too was nearing the one lakh mark. Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and West Bengal recorded their highest single-day jump in cases.
Over four lakh people have recovered so far.
The Union health ministry, meanwhile, claimed that the recovery rate in 21 states, including Delhi, is higher than the national average of 60.77 per cent.
