The coronavirus in India is continuing its frightening spread. The ministry of health and family welfare announced on Saturday morning that 9,887 cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the 24 hours ending at 8am on Saturday. Moreover, 294 people died in the same period.

This is the highest single-day spike in both COVID-19 cases and deaths from the virus in India, till date. The number of COVID-19 cases in India has reached 2,36,657, while death toll is 6,642.

On Friday night, reports indicated India had surpassed Italy to become sixth among countries with most coronavirus cases. Only UK, Spain, Russia, Brazil and the US have more COVID-19 cases than India.

The only note of encouragement for India has been the fact that the fatality rate from COVID-19 in India has been relatively lower than European nations like Spain, Italy and UK, all of which have recorded more than 25,000 deaths.

Among the list of nations with over 2 lakh COVID-19 cases, only Russia, which has 449,834 cases as Saturday, has recorded fewer fatalities than India. As of Saturday, 5,528 people died of COVID-19 in Russia.
