Thursday was a dreadful day for Kerala as the state recorded more than one COVID-19 death for the first time after the pandemic broke out. Three deaths have been reported from the state on the day. Besides, the state also reported the highest number of COVID-19 positive cases (94) on Thursday. It is for the third consecutive day that the positive cases have gone above 80.

With three more deaths, the total death toll in the state stands at 14. Out of the three deceased, two were NRKs—one from Chennai and another from the Gulf—and had other severe health conditions. Another person, Xavier (65), a native of Kollam, was found dead at his home and was tested positive after death.

Out of the 94 new positive cases, 47 are NRKs who came from abroad and 37 are those who came from other states. Maximum number of cases have been reported among those who came from Maharashtra.

The only relief is the fact that only seven among those who tested positive contracted the deceased through contacts.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said the state is yet to witness community spread. “We can reach that stage any day. But as of today, we have not reached the stage of community spread.”

All districts in the state reported positive cases on Thursday with Pathanamthitta reporting maximum number of cases (14), followed by Kasaragod (12), Kollam (11), Kozhikode (10), Ernakulam and Malappuram (8), Palakkad (7), Kannur (6), Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram (5). The state also has added nine new hot spots.

On the positive side, 39 people who were undergoing treatment for the disease tested negative. With this, the total number of people who were cured touched 690.

As of today, there are 884 patients undergoing treatment for the disease in the state.
