Bangladesh will not take in people who visited Tablighi Jamaat event in Delhi, against whom the Indian government has slapped cases for violation of visa rules or for gathering at one place during a pandemic situation.

The government of Bangladesh said that it would not allow their citizens to come to Bangladesh till they are exonerated or their punishment period is over.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister A.K. Abdul Mommen told THE WEEK: "We have come to know that number of people violated the law and participated in the congregation violating rules of law in India. Our government has decided that they would have to pay price for that."

The Indian government is yet to disclose the total number of foreigners booked from the Tablighi Jamaat assembly in March this year.

According to sources in Bangladesh government, there are around 50 Bangladeshis stuck in India. They all are quarantined in Delhi. The Bangladesh government did not reveal how many of them have been slapped with cases.

The foreign minister said that the infected people would be allowed to come back only after they were cleared by the authorities in India.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh deputy high commission in Kolkata has begun collecting applications from Bangladeshi citizens stuck in Kolkata.

"A special Bangladesh Airlines (Biman Bangladesh) flight would come to Kolkata for two consecutive days and would take back the people. Ailing patients and old people would be given preference," said the spokesman of Bangladesh deputy high commission in Kolkata.

The Indian government has decided not to charge the punitive amount for foreigners whose visas have been expired. So, not only Bangladesh, even other foreign countries are free to take back their countrymen as and when their internal situation improves, said an official.
