COVID-19: Tamil Nadu reports 96 more cases on Thursday

Tamil Nadu recorded 96 more COVID-19 positive cases on Thursday, taking the total number of positive cases in the state to 834. Of these, 27 patients have recovered and have been discharged from the hospital, while eight have died and six patients are in critical condition, with pre-existing comorbidities.

According to Health Secretary Dr Beela Rajesh, of the persons who tested positive today, 84 are linked to the Nizamuddin conference. “We have traced 1,480 people who had attended the Delhi conference. Of these, 763 people have tested positive, which includes the 554 people who were attendees of the conference and 188 people who came in contact with these attendees. Of the 1,480, 926 people who attended the conference, tested negative.”

A total of 7,267 samples have been tested. The results for 485 are pending till date. Of the 96 tested positive on Thursday, 12 patients are those who had inter-state travel history within the country, while 10 others are those who came in contact with the positive patients. As of today, five doctors in the state have tested positive, including a private doctor who came in direct contact with a patient. The health secretary, who, on Wednesday, was evasive on questions about doctors infected, herself admitted to the fact that five doctors have been infected. Of them, one doctor, along with her 10-month-old baby, her mother and her aide has been discharged. Meanwhile, two doctors in Kanyakumari and one doctor in Thoothukudi are also infected.

Stating that the rapid test kits will arrive tonight, Beela Rajesh said that the kits will give results in 30 minutes. When asked about the reliability of the rapid test kits, she said it has been approved by an expert committee and ICMR.
