A unique mourning ceremony in the time of lockdown

Ashok Patni, an industrialist from Kishangarh in Rajasthan, didn't want his mother, who passed away on April 2, go unmourned. But with the COVID-19 lockdown on across the nation, he was unable to organise a shraddhanjali.

Finally, Patni found a novel way through which hundreds of his friends and relatives got an opportunity to pay their last respects to his mother. That too, without breaking the lockdown norms.

Patni, who belongs to the Jain community, organised an online shraddhanjali sabha on April 4 through the satellite TV channel 'Jinvani' from Agra.

Hundreds of people took part in the sabha and paid tributes to the departed soul. Among those who attended were Suresh Jain, chancellor of Tirthankar Mahaveer University; Naveen Jain, mayor of Agra; Rajendra Godha from Jaipur; renowned scholar Ratnalal Bainada; Suresh Tank, MLA from Kishangarh; and thousands of Jain community members.

They paid their condolences by sending live and recorded video and audio messages. Jinvani channel telecast the programme live for three hours continuously.
