An 80-year-old woman in Karnataka's Gadag district, who had tested positive for coronavirus, died on Thursday morning. She is thought to be the sixth coronavirus fatality in Karnataka, though official confirmation of this is awaited.

The woman had been brought to a hospital on April 7, with symptoms of severe acute respiratory infection.

The victim was the first coronavirus case in Gadag district. The Times of India reported the victim was suspected to have contracted the coronavirus at a family gathering where relatives from Goa were present. After she was confirmed to be infected with coronavirus, four members of her family and 40 residents in her neighbourhood in the Ranganwadi area of Gadag were quarantined. However, these people had tested negative for coronavirus.

The Gadag woman was the 166th confirmed case of coronavirus in Karnataka. As of Wednesday, 181 cases of coronavirus were reported in Karnataka, with five deaths.

On Wednesday, a 65-year-old fruit vendor died of coronavirus in Kalaburgi, becoming the fifth fatality. The fruit vendor had no travel or contact history and had been hospitalised in the first week of April with fever and breathing difficulty. The fruit vendor was coronavirus case number 177 in Karnataka.

Kalaburgi had also reported the first coronavirus death in India.
