Army doc and JCO test positive for COVID-19; third case in army

Both had a history of travel, contact tracing has been done: Army

An Army doctor posted with the Command Hospital in Kolkata and a Junior Commissioned Officer based in Dehradun tested positive for the novel coronavirus today.

According to Army sources based in its the headquarters in Delhi, "Two persons of Indian Army tested positive today. Both had history of travel in first or second week of this month. A Colonel (Doctor) based in Kolkata and  JCO in Dehradun have been admitted to military hospital."

The Army added that the necessary contact tracing has already been done and the identified persons had been quarantined. 

"Affected two persons are keeping good health and stable," army claimes.

Army source added that 52-year-old anaesthetist doctor was in Delhi for a week from March 10-17. After his visit, he was down with fever since March 24.

And, Dehradun based JCO had also travelled to Delhi and then Jhunjhunu in Rajasthan before joining back to his unit in Chakrata in Uttarakhand. He was suffering from high fever from March 21.

Earlier a 34-year-old jawan from Ladakh Scouts posted at Leh regimental centre was found COVID-positive. Jawan had joined back from his casual leave and was in contact with his father who had returned from a pilgrimage in Iran.

Army has taken several preventive measures to contain the spread of coronavirus like setting up isolation wards at peripheral hospitals in formations on the LoC with Pakistan and Line of Actual Control on the China border.

Army official claimed that leave extension of those on leave as well as curtailment of leave to a bare minimum has been imposed. 

Segregation facilities have also been set up to observe troops already back from leave from their home states.
