As India entered complete lockdown on Wednesday to combat the outbreak of coronavirus, police personnel have been working hard to enforce it. In a bizarre incident in Kolkata, a woman licked the uniform of a police officer who tried to stop the cab she was travelling in during the lockdown.

The incident happened near Salt Lake when the cab was stopped for checks and those in the vehicle were asked to explain why they were stepping out despite the lockdown. The woman came out of the car and started abusing the policeman using cuss words. The policeman tried to reason with her and claimed that he was only talking to the driver, IANS reported.

According to a report in The Telegraph, the woman had allegedly bit her tongue, leaving the officer’s uniform blood-stained. As she did this, another man emerged from the vehicle and tried to calm her down. They said that they were on their way to buy some medicines.

Police arrested the woman, her male companion and the driver, IANS reported.

Coronavirus cases in the country crossed 600 on Wednesday as authorities beefed up preparedness to fight the pandemic. Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a complete nationwide lockdown for 21 days from Tuesday midnight, asserting in an emotional appeal "with folded hands" that unless India's 130 crore people practise social distancing, the country will lose the war against coronavirus outbreak and slide back 21 years.

The number of coronavirus cases in West Bengal increased to 10 after a 66-year-old man in Nayabad had tested positive for COVID-19. The patient was admitted to the Peerless Hospital, reported ANI. On Monday, a 57-year-old patient in Kolkata passed away due to COVID-19, becoming  the first coronavirus-related death in the city. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has urged all the citizens to obey social distancing norms during the countrywide lockdown.

Essential commodities and services such as markets, medicine shops, grocery shops will remain open, Banerjee assured.
