In a bid to ensure that daily wagers and labourers do not suffer during the 21-day lockdown owing to COVID-19, the Gujarat government on Wednesday announced that free ration will be provided to 60 lakh families.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said the decision will benefit an estimated 3.25 crore people. He said that the benefit will be given to daily wagers and labourers having ration cards.

Free ration will be given for a month to each of these from April 1.

The government will give 3.50 kg wheat and 1.50 kg rice per person, and one kg of sugar, pulses and salt per family from fair price shops.

Saying that the government is trying to ensure that these families do not face any problems, Rupani appealed to the masses to stay indoors during the lockdown period.

BJP and Congress MLAs, members of various associations have started contributing towards Chief Minister's Relief Fund to fight COVID-19.

The state government said that it is coordinating to ensure adequate stock of vegetables and milk during the lockdown period.
