The Jammu and Kashmir government on Friday announced it was revoking its detention order under the Public Safety Act against former chief minister and National Conference chief Farooq Abdullah. The move paves the way for him to be released.

Farooq Abdullah had been detained under the Public Safety Act in September 2019, a month after he and other senior leaders in Kashmir were placed under house arrest following abrogation of Article 370. The Public Safety Act allows for detention of people for a period of up to two years without trial.

Farooq's son, Omar Abdullah, and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti, both of whom have been chief ministers, are also detained under the Public Safety Act. Earlier this week, senior opposition leaders issued a joint statement calling for the release of Farooq, Omar and Mehbooba Mufti.
