Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Digvijaya Singh on Friday attacked Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat on the statement by the latter that the word ‘nationalism’ should be avoided as “it can be linked to ‘Hitler' and 'Nazism’ by some”.

In a series of tweets, citing reports on statements by Bhagwat made in Jharkhand, Digvijaya Singh said, “If Mohan Bhagwat ji really believes in what he has said, why doesn’t he order (Prime Minister) Modi and (Home Minister) Shah to withdraw CAA, NPR and NRC?’

The Congress leader, always in controversy for his statements against the RSS and other Hindutva groups, further said, “Mohan Bhagwat ji should also commit himself to Indian Constitution and ask his pracharaks (volunteers) not to spread hatred against Muslims. If he walks the talk, I have no problems with RSS.”

In another tweet, Digvijaya Singh said, “If he sincerely believes in the Indian Constitution, he has to give up the demand of Hindu Rashtra. Would he or rather would they? I don’t think so. RSS hates Mahatma Gandhi and Baba Saheb Ambedkar.”

He further said that these people are still wearing masks but their real faces are coming out in the open.

Earlier Bhagwat, addressing an RSS event in Jharkhand, had said that the word ‘nationalism’ could be interpreted in different ways and could be equated with ‘Nazism' and 'Fascism’ by some.

Bhagwat said that a Sangh volunteer had advised him during his visit to the UK not to use the word 'nationalism' as English is not our language and it could have different meaning in England.

“It’s okay to say nation, national and nationality but not nationalism. Because it means Hitler, Nazism and Fascism (in England),” Bhagwat said.
