Tamil Nadu: Two arrested in Vellore for gang-rape

The incident took place a day after the police conducted a campaign to protect women

A 24-year-old woman was gang-raped at knife-point in Vellore on Saturday night by three men.

Two suspects concerning the incident have been arrested. In the incident that took place at a public park near the Vellore Fort, the woman's boyfriend was thrashed-up by the men before they raped her. 

Ada Mani alias Manikandan, 45, of Kaspa, and Kozhi alias Sakthinathan and Ajith, 19, of Vasanthapuram, who were loitering near the fort, attacked the victims The accused trio were accused involved in pickpocket incidents earlier.

The perpetrators swooped down on the couple as they were sitting at the far end of the park close to the moat.

The victim, who is undergoing treatment at Government Vellore Medical College Hospital (GVMCH), Adukkambarai complained to the police regarding the incident. She was rescued by the police after a few people saw her lying unconscious.

Ironically, the incident took place a day after the police conducted a sustained campaign to protect women and girl children.
