Jammu and Kashmir Director General of Police Dilbagh Singh has backed Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Bipin Rawat’s suggestion of setting up de-radicalisation camps in Kashmir.

Rawat had mooted the idea of setting up such centres for misguided youth during the Raisina Dialogue held in Delhi last week.

“For some time, Pakistan and its agencies are trying a lot to spread radicalisation in this area,’’ Singh said while addressing a press conference in Srinagar “Some of our youth, especially young minds, have got affected. If any such a facility (de-radicalisation camp) comes up in Kashmir, it would be a good sign.”

He said it would definitely help people, especially, those who have gone astray.

“When we catch some people they don’t seem to be talking much sense at times,’’ he said. “Therefore, if some kind of arrangement is made where good people from civil society and experts dealing with the subject and aspects of religion and other things come together, that kind of a thing should be welcomed.”

The issues of radicalisation in Kashmir have often been cited by security experts as a reason for turmoil and militancy in Kashmir.

The police in Kashmir have often been confronted with the problem of dealing with juveniles who indulge in agitation and stone pelting. To deal with the problem, the J&K government has set up juvenile centres where the youngsters are offered counselling by experts.

The cops often find themselves on the wrong side of the law when they detain minors and juveniles during protests.

After the abrogation of Article 370, incidents of police detaining teenagers were reported from several areas in Kashmir. Most minors, however, were released after counselling and on the assurances by their parents to discipline them.
