A 12-year-old boy was killed after a grenade reportedly burst in his hands on Monday. The incident occurred in an agriculture field close to the Regional Training Centre (RTC) of CISF under Balwara police station area in Barwaha of Khargone district in Madhya Pradesh..

Another youth, about 25 years of age, was seriously injured in the incident and has been referred to Indore for treatment. The deceased boy's body was blown up to pieces, sources said.

Superintendent of police of Khargone, Sunil Kumar Pandey, told THE WEEK that preliminary probe suggested that the boy, identified as Mohit, might have picked up the grenade from the firing range of the CISF camp, which is very close to the place of incident.

The SP, however, said it is a matter of probe whether the boy had found a live grenade or a part of fired grenade that had blasted upon handling. “Preliminary forensic probe suggests that the cause of death of the boy was grenade blast, but how did the blast occur and how did the deceased exactly came in contact with the grenade is under investigation,” he said.

The officer further added that though the CISF camp and its firing range are restricted areas and there are regular warnings issued to people in the vicinity not to enter the area, the range does not have a boundary wall and could be accessed.

Earlier, there were reports that the injured person was Mohit's father. However, the SP said it was another youth whose last name is Gupta, and who is around 25 years of age. Further investigations are on, he said.
