The Bureau of immigration officials asked Jakob Lindenthal, a German student who protested against the Citizenship Amendment Act to leave the country. Lindenthal was told that him taking part in the protests violated his visa regulations.

The post-graduate student of physics at IIT-M left for Amsterdam on Monday. IIT-M said that Lindenthal was not given any written warning. Officials had asked him to leave before midnight or face deportation.

Lindenthal was questioned extensively on his political opinions. The student of the Technical University of Dresden, who was here as part of an exchange programme was holding up a placard that read 'We have been there 1933-1945' referring to Hitler's regime in Germany that selectively detained Jews.

"I was in Bengaluru this weekend. My coordinator told me today (Monday) that I should go to the immigration office. I went there and was told that I have to leave the country. This happened at 2 pm today and I had to leave the IIT Madras campus at 3 pm. I have to consult my lawyers and decide my next course of action,” he said to News18.

He also said that the statements he had made were based on the Indian constitution.
