Nine days after they allegedly raped a teenage girl in Vadodara, the two accused were arrested by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch on Sunday.

Kishan Kalubhai Mathasuriya, 28, and Jasho V. Solanki, 21 were arrested from a slum area in Tarsali area of Vadodara. Mathasuriya hails from Tarapur in Anand district while Solanki is from Rajkot district.

The girl was raped on November 28 in the Navlakhi compound in Vadodara after her male friend was beaten up by the accused and he went to seek help.

Special commissioner of Police, Ahmedabad Crime Branch, Ajay Tomar said on Sunday that they have enough evidence on the perpetrators. The rape survivor had given the police the description of the rapists following which sketches were prepared. Drones were used for the first time to zero in on them. CCTV footage were extensively studied and people residing in the area were also questioned.

After the accused are handed over to the Vadodara Police, detailed inquiry would follow as to whether they were arrested in earlier cases or not. This is reportedly the first time that they have been arrested in a rape case.

Tomar said that the duo did odd jobs, including selling balloons. He said that preliminary inquiry has suggested that they have been involved in cases of thefts and house breaks.

On being questioned about taking the accused to the site for reconstruction of the incident, Tomar said that Vadodara Police will do whatever has to be done.

Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said in Rajkot that they would seek capital punishment for the rapists and also for the accused in the recent rape cases in Surat and Rajkot. He added that special public prosecutors will be appointed and the trial will be held in fast track courts.
