Come September 17 and the ruling BJP in Gujarat is all set to give a birthday gift to its son of the soil—Prime Minister Narendra Modi—by keeping the water level of Sardar Sarovar Dam at 138 meters.

The programme has been titled “Narmade Sarvade”.

Gujarat BJP president Jitu Vaghani said in Gandhinagar on Friday that Modi had done a lot to bring Narmada waters to Gujarat during his tenure as the chief minister of Gujarat.

A programme will be held at 10 am on September 17 at the Sardar Sarovar Project dam site in Kevadia Colony as a mark of gratitude towards Modi, said Vaghani.

It's heard on the grapevine that Modi might come to Gujarat on his birthday and apart from taking part in the programme, he will also take blessings of his mother Hiraba, who stays with his younger brother near Gandhinagar.

However, there is no official confirmation about Modi's visit to Gujarat, said a senior party leader.

Narmada aarti will be done in different parts of the state and once again the party will try to drive home a message that the river is the lifeline of Gujarat. Programmes will also be held at the water bodies that have been filled at the taluka panchayat and district levels, said Bharat Pandya, state BJP spokesperson.

With heavy rains in Madhya Pradesh and also in the catchment area of river Narmada, the water level at the SSP dam site has been increasing. On Friday, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani said that the state government has all the right to hold water in the dam. If more water is released, several villages in the downstream of Narmada near Bharuch will be badly affected, he pointed out.

The BJP leaders flayed the opposition Congress for what they alleged as “always trying to create roadblocks” for the project.
