A look at the headlines today:

1. Apple expected to launch its latest iPhone today

On September 13, at the futuristic Apple Park headquarters in Cupertino,California, the Steve Jobs Theatre will host an “Apple Special Event”, expected by many to feature the launch of the iPhone 11 and two other models, a release date for iOS 13 and a few additions including upgrades to the iWatch, iPad and MacBook lineups, as well as a new Bluetooth tracking device. The new line-up of iPhones will be the highlight of the event. Speculation around the devices has been rife, but it is expected that the biggest upgrade this year will be to the cameras. A Bloomberg report suggests that the line-up will be of a series of ‘Pro’ cameras, with the standard iPhone 11 having a dual-camera setup and the ‘Pro’ edition having a three-cam setup including an ultrawide angle lens, a telephoto lens and the regular lens, on a square camera bump on the rear of the device.

2. All eyes on Scindia-Sonia meeting amid feud in MP Congress

Amid infighting in the Madhya Pradesh Congress and jostling for the state unit chief's post, senior leader Jyotiraditya Scindia is scheduled to meet party president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday in New Delhi. The development comes at a time when there are indications in political circles here that Scindia (47) is eyeing the post of Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) president, a position currently held by Chief Minister Kamal Nath who wants his man for the top organisational job. Some of his supporters in the Gwalior-Chambal region have taken to the streets, demanding their leader be appointed the MPCC chief failing which they threatened to quit the party which came to power in the state just nine months ago.

3. Madras lawyers to strike today in support of Justice Tahilramani

Local bar associations on Saturday decided to abstain from work on September 10 in support of Madras High Court Chief Justice Vijaya K. Tahilramani, who has resigned days after the Supreme Court Collegium declined her request for reconsideration of transfer to Meghalaya. Leaders of the associations stated this after meeting former president of the Madras High Court Advocates Association, G. Mohanakrishnan, here on Saturday. The collegium, headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi, had recommended transfer of Justice Tahilramani, who was elevated as the high court's chief justice on August 8 last year, to the Meghalaya High Court. 

4. UN rights chief asks India to ease current lockdowns in Kashmir

UN human rights chief Michelle Bachelet on Monday expressed "deep concern" over the impact of restrictions in Kashmir, and asked India to ease the current lockdowns to ensure people's access to basic services. Bachelet, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, also asked Pakistan and India to ensure that the human rights of the Kashmiri people are respected and protected, amid tensions between the two neighbours after the abrogation of special status of Jammu and Kashmir by New Delhi. India and Pakistan are expected to spar over Jammu and Kashmir in the coming days of the UNHRC session which will last till September 27.

5. World Cup qualifiers; shooting trials

WC qualifiers: A heart-breaking loss in the campaign-opener has dented their chances of moving ahead, and the Indian football team faces another uphill task when it takes on Asian champion Qatar in its most difficult match of the World Cup second round qualifiers on Tuesday. India let in two goals in the last eight minutes after taking an early lead to lose their opening match against Oman on September 5 in Guwahati. Ranked 62nd in the world, Qatar will start Tuesday's Group E match against 103-ranked India as overwhelming favourites. They will look to claim their second consecutive win after crushing Afghanistan 6-0. 

Shooting trials: Today has three event finals lined up in the national shooting trials—women's 10m air rifle, men's rapid fire pistol and men's 50m Rifle 3 Positions. World Cup silver medallist Sanjeev Rajput shot a steady 1172 in the men's 50m Rifle 3 Positions event in the qualification round of the national shooting trials yesterday.The seasoned Haryana shooter will go into Tuesday's finals high on confidence as the second-placed Parul Kumar of the Indian Air Force was way behind with 1164. Thomas George of Kerala topped the men's 25m Rapid Fire trials with a score of 580.

Boxing World Cup: India will open the Boxing World Championship campaign on Tuesday with Brijesh Yadav (81kg) taking on Poland's Maleusz Goinski. Asian Championships and Asian Games gold-medallist Amit Panghal (52kg), who has been seeded second and given a first-round bye, was among the three boxers who sparred with the Argentines in the morning.
