In the wake of the humiliating defeat in Lok Sabha elections, the Congress party is likely to give the full responsibility of the party affairs in Uttar Pradesh to Priyanka Gandhi, say reports. The grand old party had managed to win only one seat in the state—that of Sonia Gandhi from Raebareli. Even then party chief Rahul Gandhi lost Amethi to BJP's Smriti Irani.

The Congress had dissolved all the district units in Uttar Pradesh amid a series of resignation after the Lok Sabha elections. According to reports, the party had been in the process of an overhaul in the last three months.

Quoting sources, news agency ANI reported that the party has decided to announce the new chief of the state unit. Raj Babbar is the current UPCC president.

Sources told ANI that the new UPCC team would be ten times smaller than the previous committee. Priority will be given to youth and grassroot workers as the party is eyeing on 2022 assembly elections.

“In every district, there will be a woman leader as vice president. Dalit and OBC leaders will also be given a chance,” the sources told the news agency.

Priyanka was appointed the Congress in-charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh ahead of the Parliament elections. After the election drubbing, she has been holding a series of meetings with party leaders over the last three months to get feedback on strengthening the organisation.
