Tamil Nadu government launches exclusive TV channel for school students

In a first of its kind initiative, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Monday, launched the state's Education TV (Kalvi Tholaikkaatchi), an exclusive channel for the upliftment of students from classes 1 to 12. An initiative of the School Education Department, the channel will have tutorial videos for school students, content for students preparing for competitive exams such as NEET, career guidance and employment news for youngsters.

"Education is like eyesight. The state government has taken this initiative to support students. The students can now learn from home," Palaniswami said after launching the channel at an event in Chennai on Monday. The channel will feature educative content such as interviews of school education minister, shows on schemes provided by School Education Department, subject-based training modules, board exam assistance, employment-related shows and those on co-curricular activities including sports. It will also have separate segments on the Thirukkural and other literary content. The channel will be managed by a team of school teachers. According to sources, a group of 25 teachers in the education department have been working on the content for the past few months.

The education department had taken several initiatives to make cable TV connections available in all government schools to enable children watch the channel and make use of its programmes. Schools that do not have a cable connection can use the YouTube channel of Kalvi Tholaikkaatchi, where the programmes will be uploaded, said officials.

The channel will feature programmes from 6am to 9.30pm. Initially, the channel will be telecast for eight hours and will be increased to 16 hours in a phased manner.

The channel may also be made available through mobile applications on Android and iOS platforms soon.
