The founder of the popular Saravana Bhavan chain of eateries P. Rajagopal died in a private hospital in Chennai on Thursday. Rajagopal, who was 71, had been serving a life sentence for orchestrating the murder of an employee's husband in 2001.
Rajagopal was moved to a private hospital on Tuesday after the Madras High Court accepted his appeal on grounds of poor health. Rajagopal surrendered on July 9 to begin his sentence.

Rajagopal was first convicted in 2004 for the killing of Prince Shanthakumar, husband of Jeevajothi, a woman employee, in 2001. Rajagopal was besotted with Jeevajothi and wanted to marry her.
Rajagopal started Saravana Bhavan in 1981, with the brand becoming a global name for south Indian vegetarian cuisine.
