Two alleged Maoists were killed in an encounter in Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh late on Tuesday night. One among those killed is a woman, police said.

Three other armed Maoists have fled and intensive search operations were on. Balaghat superintendent of police Abhishek Tiwari was present at the spot, police said.

Both the killed Maoists had rewards announced on them and the male Maoist has been identified as Mangesh. The encounter occurred at Dewarbeli Pujari Tola in Lanji area of Balaghat.

Balaghat range inspector general of police K.P. Venkateshwar Rao said that police got into encounter with five armed and uniformed Naxals and gunned down two of them. The bodies have been recovered and taken for postmortem. Intensive search was on in the area for the three Maoists who fled, the IG told media.

Meanwhile, the couple in Bhopal arrested for suspected Maoists link has been taken to Lucknow on transit remand. The couple was presented in Bhopal court on Tuesday by the UP Anti-Terrorist Squad and remanded to their custody.

Manish Shrivastava and his wife Varsha alias Anita were residing in a rented accommodation in Shahpura locality of Bhopal since past five years. They were allegedly using several fake identity proofs.

After coming out of the court, the couple said they were innocent but also raised ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ slogans. Manish was said to be working for an NGO while Anita was a music teacher with local private school, police sources said.
